SUPERSTUDIO LATENT FUTURES
.
Through its title Latent Futures, Superstudio intends to explore visions and attitudes capable of seriously confronting the present environmental condition. Superstudio lands thus in the Geneva region to reflect and act on the multiple dimensions of the environmental crisis (climatic change, biodiversity collapse, water scarcity, erosion of soils, energetic descent, etc ).
.
The future (and the future of architectural practice) will be scrutinized with the aid of a compass: the four narratives developed by Sébastien Marot for the exhibition Taking The Country'€™s Side. By applying the four scenarios to the specific territory of Geneva, the studio will pursue a speculative research-oriented nature developed during the past years, adding a layer of reflection. The studio will conclude with a public exhibition in Archizoom.
.
Despite the quite enormous effort of individuals, firms and institutions to spend a good amount of their time and energy denying or being diverted from it, the environmental crisis is too well established in our physical and psychological landscape to ignore. Any curriculum or field that one might be engaged in needs to rethink with a collective approach the methodologies, tools and production means to participate and manage viable and resilient futures. Architecture must do at least as much as any other field, even more so being a spatial practice dealing with land use and land transformation.
.
The need for mobilization is urgent. It is clearly improbable that the two dominant tendencies“ doing nothing or abandoning ourselves to the mercy of the invisible hand of progress and technological innovations€“ will lead us anywhere serene and sustainable. On the other hand, it is also urgent to take the necessary time and distance to envisage possible futures.
.
We need to make space for time, and leave time to reveal space.
.
Taking into consideration its transnational dimension, the territory of Geneva will constitute the terrain for the studio’s explorative forms, embracing such diverse activities as harvest and distribution (agriculture), or transformation and construction (with special interest towards practices of re-use).
.
Beyond the four scenarios presented in Taking the Country'€™s Side (Incorporation, Negotiation, Infiltration and Secession) that will serve as a compass to the students’ work helping them to define and precise the meaning and orientation of their prospects, six topics are suggested to structure their proposals: Energy, governance, consumption, economy, leisure and landscape.
.
Under the direction of six studio leaders animated by their own assortment of topics and ambitions, the students will work in groups of 4 to 6 to imagine, script, project a philosophy, a methodology, a resilient and hopeful vision to be experimented in a fragment of the territory of the Grand Geneva.
.
The framework is thus collective and funded on debate where theory, writing, thinking and speculative projections can take shape across a wide palette of formal outputs: drawing, figurations, writings, films, illustrations, cartography, scripts, stories, fictions€“ all sorts of media will be welcome to nourish the envisioning and understanding of the environmental transformation and evolution.
.
As professional craftsmen of environmental issues we might need new tools to rethink not just our own profession, but beyond, and actively prevent the "slow cancellation of the future"€ (Franco Berardi)
.
A continuous theoretical input will be ensured by a weekly lecture every Tuesday evening where guest lecturers will be invited to stimulate the collective thinking. The semester will take its rhythm from four forums gathering all students, guests, and Superstudio team.
.
FORUMS
.
The studio rhythm will punctuate by four important forums that will provide an important theoretical input. These forums provide a base for the theoretical background of Superstudio and are constituted by a series of lectures, debates and presentations curated by the Superstudio team. Students will participate actively in those forums, constantly positioning themselves in relation to the topics presented by forum and defining/reviewing along their research topics.
.
Forum 1. Introduction to the narratives. Presenting and discussing with the students the 4 scenarios of Taking the Country'€™s side.
.
Forum 2. Images of Latent Futures. What are the tools and images possible to envision possible and viable futures within the realm of architecture.
.
Forum 3. Studios in discussions. A debate and oratory format by the students and studios. Student led.
.
Forum 4. The Latent Futures Show. A public exhibition presenting the work of the semester.
.
The students will prepare and conduct, during the forums, interviews with the speakers. All presentations will be filmed and will form exhibition material for a final show, at the end of the semester.
.
THE LATENT FUTURES SHOW
.
The final output, usually presented as €œ"final crits" will take the form of a public exhibition and an exhibition opening. The aim is to present the work €œ"beyond the studios" in order to confront the students to a professional context of presenting a research work within a creative milieu.
.
The show will compile and present in a coherent and precise way an exhaustive documentation of the research process.
.
At the end of the course, students must be able to demonstrate their abilities to conduct a full prospective research and present it in an exhibition and oratory mode. They shall master the four scenarios of Taking The Country'€™s Side and present a position as architects to the contemporary critical condition of land use and territorial occupation.
.
territory, vernacular, sustainability, robustness, autonomy, system, complexity, polytechnicity, environmental project, technology, latent futures, matter, ownership, economy
.
SUPERSTUDIO LATENT FUTURES is a new pedagogical format led by three professors and a specific team of studio leaders chosen for their competences on the subject. SUPERSTUDIO LATENT FUTURES will be divided in six studios. Every studio will have its own way of developing the research, according to the studio leaders' specificities and expertise. Each studio will work on a specific piece of land within the Geneva region.
.
1. FORUMS
4 Forums will provide the theoretical input from which the students can develop the work over the semester. The forums will consist of : lectures, organized and prepared exchanges between lecturers and students, oral and transcribed interviews of the lecturers by the students.
.
2. ARPENTAGE
Land surveying or "arpentage". Walks through the territory with "recording" tools (film, audio, drawing)
.
3. COMPETENCES. TOOLS
The studio will develop specific representational and textual tools in relation to the topics explored in each studio. The team will encourage and promote diversity of tools and output as long as they are thought as the best and most poignant way of presenting the work.
.
4. WEEKLY REVIEWS
Continuous evaluation by the studio leaders on a weekly basis. The course demands that work be developed and presented every week.
.
5. EXHIBITION
Bespoke exhibition presenting the work of the semester "beyond the studio". The concept and formalization of the exhibition will fully be part of the semester's work. A dedicated transversal team (a number of students per studio) will develop the concept, content and material of the semester with one of the professors.
Students must:
.
. be able to develop and present in exhibition mode a full research on the given topic with a clear and affirmed position towards the proposed topics, narratives and context of study.
. Attend the forums and participate to the forum debates.
. conduct prepared interviews with the speakers and transcribe them.
. physically attend the studios every week. Develop and present the weekly work and be able to clearly and synthetically present the evolution of the work to the studio leaders.
. develop specific representational competences
. develop oratory skills to present the work
. participate with a dedicated team (prof and studio leaders) in making the exhibition at Archizoom.
. organize the opening of the exhibition with presentations

A printed reader will be provided at the beginning of the semester. Each student has to support the printing with 10 CHF.
A digital libary with selected texts will be shared from 05.09.2022
